5 tips to help you save money on car insurance

If you're living paycheck-to-paycheck, it is important to find expenses you can cut to save money. One essential expense that can be reduced is car insurance. Consider the following five tips to help save money in the future:

  1. Bundle insurance policies - Chances are you probably have more than one type of insurance policy. Whether it is life, health, or another plan, Kelley Blue Book says you can save money on all of them by bundling with the same provider. Not only can you save money, but it also makes your life easier, as you aren't being billed by three different providers for all of your insurance policies. It doesn't require much extra work, and you can save a significant amount of money in the long run, which makes this a no brainer.
  2. Increase your deductible - If all of your policies are already with one provider - don't worry - you can still save money. According to Bankrate.com, increasing your deductible can reduce the amount of money you pay in premiums. However, this is a gamble, because if you end up in an accident, your out-of-pocket expenses will be much higher. But, if you complete this move, and avoid an incident, you could end up saving a lot of money over time.
  3. Carpool with friends/co-workers - Believe it or not, simply cutting down on the amount of miles you drive can save you money on car insurance. Art Scott, a retired insurance agent for State Farm, told Bankrate.com that providers track mileage. He said anything under 7,500 miles is the "pleasure rate," which can lead to the most affordable insurance premiums. Car pooling to work can help you reach this number, so if you have co-workers that live in your area this could be a good move.
  4. Compare quotes - You may be drawn in by advertisements from Geico or Allstate, but that doesn't mean you should choose one of these companies for your insurance without comparing other quotes. When buying car insurance, you should compare at least three different offers, as you could get three different prices. Failing to do so could result in you paying more for insurance than necessary. So, while you may enjoy the Geico Gecko or Mayhem from Allstate, don't let these catchy ads prevent you from comparing quotes from other providers.
  5. Only buy what you need - Car insurance policies aren't one-size-fits-all. Your needs will likely be different than your neighbors, which is why you need to be sure you're only buying what you need. For example, if you have a car that isn't worth much, buying collision may not be necessary, as your deductible could be higher than the value of your vehicle.

Saving on expenses is a great way to find more money if you're in a tough situation, and there are multiple ways to cut the cost of car insurance.
